Will Vietnam succeed in seizing the opportunity Negotiations with the US on customs are set to begin soon

The Vietnamese government has revealed the launch of the first rounds of trade negotiations regarding tariffs with the United States this week, in a move that reflects progress in economic relations between the two countries, as Vietnam seeks to strengthen its position in global supply chains. These talks are part of a broader American initiative aimed at enhancing trade partnerships with a select group of strategically important countries.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh confirmed that the first round of these talks will be held on May 7, noting that Vietnam is among the six countries identified by Washington as a priority in its upcoming trade negotiations.

This list also includes India, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom, reflecting the United States' desire to build deeper economic ties with strategic Asian and European partners.

This development comes at a time when the United States is looking to diversify its trade partners and reduce reliance on supply chains dominated by China. Meanwhile, Vietnam is seeking to capitalize on this momentum to boost its exports and attract more foreign investment, especially amid rising geopolitical tensions and the shift of global companies towards more stable alternatives in Asia.

While specific details on the agenda have not been disclosed, observers expect the talks to focus on reducing barriers and trade tariffs, facilitating access to markets, as well as addressing issues related to intellectual property rights and environmental standards.
