The U.S. Senate voted early Thursday to pass a "cuts" bill supported by President Donald Trump that includes a $9.4 billion reduction in spending. The legislation was passed by a narrow margin, with 51 members voting in favor and 48 against, as two Republican members voted against the measure.
At the same time, this bill reflects only a small part of the spending cuts proposed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was established by Donald Trump when he took office last January. If adopted, it is expected to lead to significant reductions in foreign aid and public broadcasting programs.
Earlier reports suggested that President Trump wanted to pass the bill in the U.S. Senate without any amendments.
However, since the council made changes to the text of the bill, it will now return to the House of Representatives for a final vote on it.
