Prime Minister warns: France's fate is at stake

French Prime Minister François Bayrou stated that France's fate hangs in the balance regarding the confidence vote scheduled for September 8, as political circles expect him to lose this vote that he called to resolve the budget crisis.

Bayrou explained in an interview with four French news channels, including France Info, BFMTV, LCI, and Cnews, that the upcoming parliamentary vote does not only determine the fate of the Prime Minister but the fate of France as a whole. He emphasized that the coming days will be crucial for the country's future amid a stifling political and economic crisis.

The 74-year-old Bayrou surprised the political arena with his announcement to seek a confidence vote in a divided Parliament, in an attempt to garner sufficient support for his government's plan aimed at reducing spending and controlling France's rising debt.

The Prime Minister confirmed that he is not ready to step down as the opposition demands, adding: "If you think I will say goodbye or withdraw from the battles I've been fighting for years, you are mistaken." Bayrou also accused some political forces of seeking to spread chaos, particularly targeting far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who leads a fierce opposition against the government's plans.

Bayrou hopes to start negotiations with opposition parties starting Monday, conditioning their acceptance of the austerity measures aimed at reducing debt. However, opposition leaders have stressed that it may be too late, firmly rejecting his budget.

As France awaits the parliamentary vote, concerns are growing over the escalation of the political crisis, which may deepen economic and social tensions in the country in the coming phase.
